and now for something completely different:
Drupal is an open source content management system and website development tool. It is highly regarded as one of the best website frameworks available.
It is characterized by intuitive content management and detailed site features administration. It has advanced user management and highly customizable system of access control and permissions that can be easily applied in any organizational structure. Furthermore, it has outstanding documentation and community support and the code is secure and well tested by numerous developers.
Drupal gives an excellent cost/benefit ratio and its use can significantly reduce development time and project cost. It allows faster development, not only in the currently planned work but also in the future, when site owners decide to extend or add features. There are no licensing fees.
The main strength of the system is in its modularity: while the core modules allow essential functionality, it can be extended through thousands of community contributed and tested modules. Even so, Web applications often require unique functionality, and to this purpose I can write custom Drupal modules.
Drupal's many features and add-on modules allow it to be used for a variety of website needs. This goes well beyond usual CMS-provided functionality that typically involves blogging, news or presentations. For example, it is possible to fully integrate e-commerce operations with the Ubercart module, to build complex event management systems or multimedia sites. Over the last years I have worked on a number of Drupal-based projects and I have yet to find an application that can't be built using this technology.
When it comes to visual appearance, Drupal can accommodate any modern design. Similar to the modules, there are thousands of community contributed themes. However, we all value our site's uniqueness and all my clients have always requested a custom theme based on an original design.
Who is using Drupal?
While there are no known install base statistics, a conservative guestimate points to hundreds of thousands of sites actively run Drupal. This includes Government, corporations, universities, celebrities... Please see a well presented list of major sites built in Drupal, maintained by the system's original creator.
